ART - SCIENCE - TECHNOLOGY

Andøy Space and AiRV will be able to represent something entirely new in terms of art-and-science cooperation in Vesterålen. ANDØYA SPACE

Andøya Space Education is a national centre and school laboratory in space-related education and training for all academic levels . They are working to enhance interest in natural science, maths and technology and they offer a range of programmes, from international space camps for young people to astronaut school for young children. The collocation with Andøya Space allows Space Education to actively use the unique national resources of the space centre. Space Education uses outer space as a project all the way down to kindergarten level, and they encourage specialisation in key areas such as: Time, distance, size, seasons, day and night, colour, form, language, mathematics, biology, wonderment, philosophy, system, contexts, technique, research etc.

The stay at Andøya Space will be linked to art that will be place-specific within the local area. The artists’ task will be to create art that is integrated with the surrounding environment and that investigates its relationship to the on-site location. At the same time, all of Andøy will be used as a source of inspiration and a part of the residency.

ANDØYA MUNICIPALITY

Andøy municipality lies at the northernmost tip of Vesterålen; it has 4,700 citizens distributed on the islands of Andøy and Hinnøya. Andenes, the municipal centre, is located on the northernmost end of Andøya and rests on the very edge of the Continental Shelf. The fishing industry and whale tourism are therefore important economic drivers in the municipality.

In addition to traditional businesses, the municipality has high-tech workplaces affiliated with land-based salmon farming, the northern lights and atmospheric research, as well as Northern Europe’s first installation for launching satellites into space.

RESIDENCY ARTISTS

Artists who have previously had residencies at Andøya have highlighted that they have been given space and freedom to work while at the same time have had hosts who have facilitated discovery of the municipality and acquaintance with the natural surroundings, the places and people of the municipality.

THE PROJECT

The project will entail reflection on the relationship between art, technology and science, and AiRV wishes to make provisions for an interesting and rewarding collaboration between the artists and the technical personnel and research environment at Andøya Space and Space Education centre. The project will involve an active deconstruction of the borderlines between art and natural science. Two areas that can overlap one another, or a dividing line that can be challenged.
