Air Vesterålen (AiRV) er et fireårig prosjekt der de fem vesterålskommunene skal være vertskap for kunstnere fra Europa. De skal besørge et sted der kunstnere kan oppholde seg og arbeide. Det betyr i praksis at maks 15 kunstnere i året kan komme til de fem kommunene. Hver kunstner får to opphold, som skal ende med at de setter spor etter seg, i form av et kunstnerisk resultat.
Air Vesterålen (AiRV) is a four-year project during which the five municipalities of Vesterålen will host artists from Europe. Their obligation is to provide a place where the artists can stay and work. In practice, this means that a maximum of 15 artists per year can have residencies in the five municipalities. Each artist is granted two stays that end with their having left behind them a result in the form of an artwork.
Ambisjonen er at disse resultatene skal gi et felles kunstløft for Vesterålen med en stor internasjonal dimensjon, sterk lokal forankring og ulikt søkelys på hvert sted. Det skal også bidra til identitets- og kunnskapsutvikling, skape oppmerksomhet og opplevelser. Det skal synliggjøre Vesterålen og styrke kultursamarbeidet i regionen – og sette Nord-Norge på kartet. Store ambisjoner altså, men daglig leder i Nordland Akademi, Maria Johansen, er svært positiv:
“Dette er ei utvikling av den residens-ordningen som har vært. Da vi samarbeidet med kunstnere på arrangementet Elvelangs i fjor, fant vi ut at vi måtte samarbeide mer, koordinere og løfte fram Vesterålen.”
Den opprinnelige planen var et «kick off» med Elvelangs på Melbu i september 2020 og full oppstart i 2021. Så kom koronapandemien og det ble utsatt. Derfor har Nordland Akademi fungert som prosjektleder ut 2020. Men det skal søkes etter en ekstern prosjektleder fra 2021.
Gjennom Samfunnsløftet har Sparebanken Nord-Norge gitt en grunnfinansiering på 1,5 millioner kroner til prosjektet. Det skal også søkes om finansiering fra Nordland fylkeskommune og Norsk kulturråd. Også hver kommune i regionen må regne med å få en søknad.
Ulike sjangere
I hver kommune er det ulike konsept som skal utvikles. For Sortland er det Art Urban spaces, Den blå byen ved sundet, I Øksnes er det Coastal culture, Det gamle fiskeværet Nyksund. I Bø er det Art Nature der arenaen er Friluftsgalleriet, Og i Andøy er det Art Technology Lab på Space Center/Narom. I Hadsel er det Art Science Lab på Neptun på Melbu, som også er ønsket knyttet til «Elvelangs».
– Hele Europa vil bli invitert og begrensingen er ut fra interesse. Det blir veldig spennende å se hvem som søker og kommer hit, sier Johansen.

The intention is for these results to become a joint artistic boost for Vesterålen having a grand-scale international dimension, a strong local foundation and varying angles of focus at each place. Another aim is to contribute to the development of identity and knowledge, to attract attention and create experiences. The intention is to make Vesterålen visible and reinforce cultural cooperation in the region – and put Northern Norway on the map. These are great ambitions, but administrative manager for Nordland Academy, Maria Johansen, is very positive:
“This is a further development of the residency programme we have had earlier. During the collaboration with artists on the Elvelangs event last year, we decided that we wanted to cooperate even more to coordinate and to put Vesterålen in the public eye.”
The original plan had the Elvelangs event as a “kick-off” at Melbu in September 2020 and the start of the main event in 2021. The coronavirus pandemic came along, and our plans were postponed. Nordland Academy has been the leader of the project up until the end of 2020. However, we will be looking for an external project manager as of 2021.
Through the Community Boost programme, Sparebanken Nord-Norge has provided basic funding for the project in the amount of 1.5 million NOK. We will apply for supplemental funding from the Nordland County Administration and from Arts Council Norway. In addition, each municipality in the region can expect to receive an application from us.
Different genres
In every municipality, a different concept will be developed. For Sortland, the theme is Art Urban spaces, The Blue City by the Sea. In Øksnes, it is Coastal culture, The old fishing village of Nyksund. In Bø it is Art Nature, with the Outdoor gallery as the main arena. In Andøy, it is Art Technology Lab at the Space Center/Narom. In Hadsel, it is Art Science Lab at Neptun in Melbu, which we also wish to link to «Elvelangs».
“All of Europe will be invited, and interest is the only limitation. It will be quite interesting to see who applies for a residency and comes here,” Johansen says.
