Oppdatert: 14. jul. 2022

‘Scapes’ consists of three unique art works developed by each artist and inspired by the extraordinary natural and cultural diversity in Melbu/Hadsel, Vesteraalen. Each work are focusing on differing types of scape including sea, sky and land.

Seascapes: Andrea Greenwood (UK)

Seascape is a project that evolved after an artist residency in Melbu in 2019 and has been created by artist Andrea Greenwood. It is a collaboration between Galleri Espolin in Kabelvåg, Lofoten, and Nordland Akademi with participation from school children in Melbu and Lofoten. The exhibition in the Neptune tanks, is part of the Sommer-Melbu festival with a suspended installation in the tank.

Taking inspiration from the artist Kaare Espolin Johnson, a scraping technique has been applied to the forms to create abstract drawings of the sea which has achieved a striking depth of colour and a beautiful blue glow throughout the installation.

Andrea is doing creative workshops in Lofoten at Galleri Espolin on Thursday 7th July and in Melbu on Friday 8th July in the square in the tent.

Landscapes: Mia Harris (UK)

Artist Mia Harris visited Melbu, Hadsel in 2019 when working with Neptune Art/Science Lab as part of an artists residency with Nordland Akademi. Mia met a group at Bankplassen and led some textiles and audio workshops around the theme “Home Sweet Home” reflecting on what home is. What does home feel, look, smell, sound and taste like? What is home if home is a memory? What makes a home?

Building on the textiles and audio created in 2019 and 2020 for Elvelangs, people from Iran, Ethiopia, Afghanistan, Tanzania, Colombia, Peru, Turkey, Syria, Spain, Argentina, Kenya, and Norway have been part of creating capes, audio and textiles to celebrate the diversity of Melbu and Vesterålen. The design of the capes are based on the shape of the sami design “lukkha”. The capes are a mix of fabrics that represent all the people who live in Melbu/ Vesterålen: Norwegian, African, South American, Middle Eastern and European countries.

On the back of the capes are printed photos of Melbu; sunsets, fishing rope, drawing designs for house painting from Melbu museum, The Neptune tanks, fishing glass buoys, and boats and mountains. On the front of the capes are a mix of traditional Norwegian fabrics featured in homes and fabrics and decorations from a variety of countries to celebrate all the different cultures and the strong sense of community in Melbu.

The Parachute includes all the textiles pieces that the Melbu community have made in the last 4 years with a theme of "home", and messages to the world in different languages; Spanish, Ethiopian, Farsi, Norweigan, English. The layout of the pattern is based on the sami brooch, a "sølje" is a traditional brooch for women, which keeps the sami kofte (national costume) in front of the neck together. The circles each include a piece of textiles and the intention is to add more textile contributions to the parachute over time.

Skyscapes: Will Renel (UK)

Hans prosjekt “Skyscapes” tar utgangspunkt i himmelen over Melbu.

Skyscapes is a participatory art project led by artist Will Renel which celebrates the changing colours, light and shapes in the sky. Between September 2020-2021 local people from Melbu were invited to take a photograph of the sky at any time, in any location, on any day and to submit the image to the project. From this a unique archive of skyscapes has been created as a visual celebration of light and colour that connects local people with the changing dynamics of the sky throughout the year.

Using the skyscape archive Will created a film, showcasing how the colours and shapes of the sky in and around Melbu morph and evolve throughout the year. The film includes a soundscape composition that Will created merging found sounds and calming instrumentation.

Alongside the film, Will har designed a collection of postcards which audiences are invited to take home from the exhibition. Each postcard highlights an individual colour extracted from an image within the archive. The postcards are stamped with the date, time and location of the original image, creating individual moments of colour frozen in time and space from throughout the year.

Utstillingen står til lørdag 9.juli. Velkommen!
